Georgia CORE honors 20 “Trailblazers” in cancer care

The Georgia Center for Oncology Research and Education has named 20 Trailblazers who have made a lasting impact on cancer care in the state. Georgia CORE is celebrating its 20th anniversary, and with this milestone, honoring 20 members of Georgia’s oncology community, state leaders, scientists, and philanthropists for their presence and commitment early in the history of the state’s cancer initiative.
“We are happy to honor those individuals who, through research, education, or advocacy blazed the trail to create and sustain Georgia’s innovative, collaborative, and patient-centered cancer ecosystem.” said Georgia CORE president and CEO Lynn Durham. “The Trailblazers were a major force behind Georgia CORE’s statewide impact, and for that we are eternally grateful.”
Georgia CORE is also recognizing Today’s Innovators who have embraced the original vision of collaboration and advancement throughout the state’s cancer ecosystem and are working today to continue to enhance cancer research and exceptional care for all Georgians.
The honorees were recognized at “A Toast to the Trailblazers” in February where Georgia CORE hosted more than 350 guests from Georgia’s oncology and philanthropic communities. The celebration gala was an opportunity to recognize the winners of two annual awards given by the organization. The first Phillip H. Street Cancer Community Service Award and the $5,000 gift accompanying the award was given to Tiah Tomlin-Harris. The Matt Mumber M.D. Award for Excellence in Cancer Patient Navigation, which gives $2,000 each year to an outstanding navigator. This year the award went to Emily Beard.
Proceeds from ticket sales, the wine pull, donors, and our generous sponsors (below) will go to Georgia's new “Stop Cancer” License Plate Fund, which will provide free cancer screenings for some of the state's deadliest cancers to under-resourced Georgians.
