Breast Cancer License Tag Awardee Luncheon Hosted by Georgia CORE and the Georgia State Office of Rural Health

ATLANTA—On Tuesday, May 24, 2016, the Georgia Center for Oncology Research and Education (CORE) hosted a Breast Cancer License Tag Awardee Luncheon at the Loudermilk Center in Atlanta, Georgia. The 45 attendees represented 18 organizations and 6 reviewers from across the state of Georgia.  Each of these organizations is a recipient of the Breast Cancer License Tag Grant collectively serving 87 counties.

Funded through the sale and renewal of the Breast Cancer License Tag, the Georgia ACTS Grant Program expands breast cancer education, screening, access, and outreach as well as treatment services.  These funds are dedicated to improving breast cancer services for the state’s minority and under or uninsured women.  For each tag that is bought or renewed, $22 is gathered into a fund that is awarded to non-profits based on a review by cancer experts.  From 2013-2016, over $2.9 million in grants have been awarded.

At the luncheon, each of these high-caliber organizations presented their accomplishments achieved through the grant.  Categorized as either educational or treatment programs, these organizations have collectively provided for 140,977 people trained, 6,453 screening and diagnostic mammograms, 4,471 instances of navigation and case management, 965 patients treated, 642 ultrasounds and 124 biopsies.  The program is administered through Georgia CORE on behalf of the State Office of Rural Health, Department of Community Health.  

“Breast Cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death for women in Georgia,” said Angie Patterson, Vice President of Georgia CORE and a 15 year breast cancer survivor.  “It is inspirational to hear of the strides these organizations are taking towards educating, screening and treating women in Georgia.  This work that this grant money supports will help identify breast cancer at an early stage, thereby making treatment more effective.”

Winning organizations provide matching funds or in-kind support that equals or exceeds the amount of the grant.
